I have not been idle with love

I have not been idle
With love
I have pursued it
Unto its edge
Tried to weave
A lasting thing
From the barest threads
I have willed it to live
Where it could not
Held on too tightly
And bent the wings
Burned others
In my eagerness to burn
Thrown myself
Into the air
And fallen, uncaught
I have leaned
Its terrible weight
Unbeckoned
Like a club
Mistaken love
For other things
And other things
For love
I have been found wanting
In so many ways
But I have not been idle
This heart
Is polished
From use
